Ryan Mauro, founder, Mauro Institute (formerly an investigative researcher at the Capital Research Center and former director of intelligence for the Clarion Project), warns that a loose but interconnected coalition of adversaries—what he terms the Global Seditionist Movement—is actively waging asymmetric warfare against the West. This movement attacks Western civil societies through an interconnected "ecosystem of hate and dysfunction," ideological insurgencies, and coordinated efforts to sow chaos and division.

The movement encompasses far-left extremists (including Marxists, communists, and anarchists), certain Islamist groups, elements of the far-right, and globalist actors, often backed or influenced by anti-Western state actors such as Iran, Russia, China, and Qatar. These factions, despite mutual hatreds, unite tactically against shared Western targets, particularly the U.S.-led international order.

According to Mauro, key funding streams for components of this movement come from foreign governments (e.g., Iran, Qatar, and sometimes China-linked networks) as well as domestic and international progressive foundations and donors that support aligned activist organizations. Specific networks include pro-terrorism protest coalitions tied to campus unrest, anti-Israel activism, and broader revolutionary efforts.

Their overarching plan involves destabilizing Western democracies through mass protests, election interference, cultural subversion, promotion of violence or extremism, and weakening national cohesion—ultimately aiming to erode, overthrow, or remake the existing U.S.-led global system in favor of their respective ideologies or state interests.

Mauro argues that this "Axis of Sedition" (the broader global coalition, with the U.S.-based Seditionist Movement as its domestic arm) has a realistic chance of succeeding unless Western societies recognize the transformed nature of the threat and adapt strategically in this new era of hybrid ideological and foreign-backed insurgencies.
